Long ago, there were four blind people. They wanted to know what elephants looked like. Because of the blindness, they could only touch the elephant.

从前，有四个盲人很想知道大象是什么样子，但是他们看不见，只能用手触摸。

The fat blind person touched the elephant’s ivory first. He said: “ Oh, I see! The elephant is big, thick and smooth, just like the carrots.”

胖盲人先摸大象的牙齿。他说：我明白了，小象就像一个又大又粗又光滑的大萝卜。

The tall blind person touched the elephant’s ear and yelled: “ No, no, no. The elephant is a big fan!”

高个盲人摸大象的耳朵。不，不，小象显然是一把大蒲扇！

The short blind person touched the elephant’s leg. He said: “ You are all wrong! The elephant is a pillar.”

他喊道：每个人都胡说八道，小象只是一根大柱子。原来小盲人摸了小象的腿。

The old blind person said: “ The elephant is not that big. It’s just like a rope.” He was touching the elephant’s tail.

而老盲人呢，却嘟嘟地喊道：唉，小象没那么大，它只是一根麻绳。原来他摸的是小象的尾巴。

The four blind people were arguing endlessly. Each of them said he himself was right. We all know that none of them is right.

四个盲人争吵不休，都说自己摸到的才是小象的真面目。事实上呢？他们也没说对。

这个故事告诉我们：不能只看到事物的一部分，而要看全局，这样才能全面、真实地了解事物的情况。

We should look at the whole picture instead of only seeing part of it. Only in that way can we fully and truly understand the situation of things.
